Once again, this weekend we’re off to our top secret location for another shoot with (in my opinion) one of the country’s best nude models – Rosa Brighid. The location is a private and secluded smallholding in rural Warwickshire with a beautiful mill race stream, 2 lakes, a barn, stables, lakeside hut, boat, and the most beautiful old trees. There are still a couple of spaces – get in touch if you’d like to come along.
I wanted to share this image with you. It was taken by Katie Bulmer, a student on the Fotofilia ten week “Advanced Photography” course. It was taken for the first of two assignments on the course in which the students were asked to reproduce a pre-existing image, either faithfully to the original or as a completely different version – as long as there was an obvious similarity between the two. I think Katie pulled that off, don’t you?
In case you haven’t worked it out already, the photograph is based on “Man Ray’s “El Violin De Ingres” from 1924. Katie’s model was her mom, photographed in the studio. The finishing touches to the post-production were done in class. Here’s the original for comparison…

A few final images from my shoot with the lovely Kate Anne Cooper at Fotofilia this week. After the various other sets, where better to end up than the cafe? Our cafe. Or rather the excellent Urban Coffee Company cafe which is also situated within the BOM (Birmingham Open Media) building. Sadly, the staff had long since gone home but at least we were able to use this brilliant location for a few final shots before we were finally beaten by the clock.

More images from my shoot with the lovely Kate Anne Cooper at Fotofilia this week. This little batch feature our much-used (by me anyway) aluminium-effect wall and a lorry wheel that Chrissy (of DollHouse fame, who also uses my Fotofilia studio and has just about the world’s largest collection of props) happens to have left lying around.
Amazing what you can achieve in just a couple of hours. Derby-based model Kate Anne Cooper modelled for the Fotofilia “Special Studio Evening” this week and during the two and a half hours she was there, and despite having to “share” Kate with my little group, we were still able to get through several sets, outfits and locations.
First up are these headshots, taken with my Nikon DSLR and 50mm f1.4 (set at about f2.2) and using only the continuous modelling lights from two Bowens flash heads
Last weekend we ran a fully-booked workshop entitled “The Speedlight Studio” which focussed (sorry) on how to use battery-powered strobes/speedlights in place of the usual mains-powered Bowens kit that we usually use at Fotofilia. We began with a single light, building up to a 3-light set-up using coloured gels and even worked with combining ambient and flash for some interesting white balance contrasts.
Our brilliant model, Megan Mercy (formerly Megan Jaye), provided the perfect subject for our practical demos and here are a few of my shots from the day to give you some idea what we got up to…
